The “Annual Skip Whalen Ice Fishing Derby” was a success with a great turnout considering the brisk wind chill factor and the 15” of ice on Echo Lake. Kudos to the committee for another fantastic effort. Everyone had a terrific time. The biggest fish was a nice 5.5 pound Large Mouth Bass, which I believe, is the second largest fish taken in the 33 years that we have held this derby. The monster was caught by Russell Van Alphen. Second prize went to Matt Osak with a 3.9 lb. 23” pickerel, who just edged out Tim Leprovost who caught a 3.8 lb., 24” pickerel. Our cash drawing winners were: Shannon Cella; first prize of $500. Second prize of $100 to Tyler Race and Spike Palivoda won our third prize of $50. All of the club volunteers did a fantastic job once again ensuring that every participant had plenty of fun, food and prizes! Great job by all!
Club Calendar
Youth Archery Grand Finale Fun Shoot to be held March 13th at 9:30 am, followed by trophy presentations and pot-luck luncheon. 62 youngsters are participating this year.
The SSC Annual Game Dinner will be held Saturday, March 20th with cocktail hour and hors d'oeuvres from 5-6 pm, with dinner following. While we have several nice donations of game meat, we can always use more. Please call Chairman Marc Fadding at (413) 298-5447 or (413) 822-4249with your donations and requests for tickets. Last year’s event was a huge culinary success, so please, call in your ticket orders early. Adults are $15 each while children 10 and under are $7.
The Adult Archer League Banquet will be held on Wednesday, April 17th at 6:00 pm. This is a pot-luck dinner and anyone who wants to attend is welcome.
A new fundraiser: We are sponsoring a 30 day Sportsmen’s Sweepstakes for the month of September 2010. The committee, chaired by Mike Buffoni, has put together a drawing of 25 long guns, plus 5 $250 gift certificates to 5 different local sporting goods stores who are assisting us with this project. We will be printing 1000 tickets starting with #000 and going up to #999. The cost per ticket will be $20 each. On each day of the month of September, the holder of the ticket which number matches the 3 digit New York State evening 3 digit lottery number, will win the prize being offered for that day. Please call Buff at (413)626-4552 if you would like more information or a book of tickets to sell for the club. This is a first time event for us, and we are going to need assistance from all of our club members. We are offering a nice selection of shotguns and rifles. The full list of which will be printed on each ticket. A&J Sporting, Avid Sports, Dave’s Sporting, Pete’s Gun Shop & Shooters Highland are assisting us with the sweepstakes.
The nominating committee chaired by Marty Salvadore is accepting volunteers to run for officer positions and board memberships at this time. Marty can be reached at (413) 298-4916. The election will be held at the April Board Meeting. Now is the time to step forward & help our club!
